UPDATE ON SWEET SCOUT!

Many of you have been asking about Scout's status and we finally have some news to share.

Scout is now back in our rescue after two years and is settling in very well! He is sharing a foster home with many other dogs of all shapes, sizes and sex - and seems to get along with all. Scout also appears to be house trained and a very loving boy.

Below are some new pictures and update from one of Scout's foster moms.

Here are a couple pics of Scout. He is doing great! He even tried to play today.

He enjoys going for walks, he gets scared sometimes at loud noises but other than that he enjoys his walks.

He is getting along well with the 12 adult dogs here. He has not really interacted with the four puppies yet as the pups are outside most of the day.

He is such a sweet dog who just wants to be loved, he loves to give kisses. He will make someone a wonderful companion!

A big "thank you" to Lisa and Leanne for taking this boy in when you are already overflowing with the four legged friends. Thanks also to Bobbie for keeping him safe for the last few years.

BLAST FROM THE PAST - UPDATE ON LING LING!

We love to receive updates on our rescue dogs from their adoptive families! Below is a terrific update on Ling Ling - a Shar Pei mix that was slated for euthanasia at our local shelter over a year ago for "cage aggression."

Ling Ling is now living the life of a queen - and obviously is not a danger to society!

I know you guys are so busy you may not remember a pei mix girl you adopted out a while back.

I just wanted to let you know that she is the best dog anyone could ask for.
She was being housed by a shelter and they were going to euthanize her because of cage aggression. We have yet to see any sign of aggression, I guess she was just terrified.

I have not gotten a chance to thank you for saving her and giving her another chance.

I have had rescue dogs in the past and found that they usually come with problems of some kind that have to be resolved. She has not caused us any trouble at all since she came to our home.

My husband re-named her Chippy. She goes running with him for his ongoing job training as a firefighter all of the time. She plays so well with my 18 month old, they do tug of war. She growls and jumps and makes it look like she is trying so hard but barely pulls and lets him win every time. Her name was his third word.

My niece and nephew dress her up like a doll and she loves the attention. She has trained so easily and can do tons of useful things, like pick up objects and hand them to me.

She has her own giant bed, but uses it for toy storage and refuses to sleep anywhere but HER sofa.

Everywhere we take her people remark on what a good dog she is. They are always surprised to hear she is a shelter dog.

Thank you so much for everything you do, please don't stop saving these awesome dogs like our Chippy!

Thursdays are the best days of the week for us - because it is transport day! The day all of our volunteer efforts pay back.

Almost every Thursday we have the honor to bring some of our rescued and rehabilitated dogs to the transport pick up location. From there they spend several hard long days making the trip to rescue groups in New England where there are loving foster and adoptive families waiting to receive our chosen pups!

So many hours and funds are sunk into turning a malnourished, once unloved dog into and adoptable family member. Sometimes it seems to others that we are crazy people working on a task that cannot be completed!

And then comes transport day:) We are reminded that there is a light at the end of the long, dark tunnel - at least for a few lucky pups....

This past Thursday - three Lab mix pups, Penny, Polly & Phoebe, left for their new lives. You can see what gorgeous girls they turned out to be! If it were not for the efforts of PAWS volunteers and foster parents, Lisa and Leanne, the girls would not have survived to see this day. A BIG "thank you" to Uncle Joe for saving these girls from their former life and bringing them to PAWS.

HOME AT LAST! CALLIE & CHARLIE

As some of you know - we have spent a great deal of time begging and pleading for help with Callie and Charlie - two wonderful Chocolate Labs that have been waiting for many many months for a foster home that could take them through Heartworm treatment.

Sometimes it feels like nobody is out there listening - or that the world has become annoyed with our constant begging in the name of the dogs - and then - out of the blue - comes a miracle - that shows that indeed SOMEONE is listening.

The miracle of the moment is that Callie and Charlie have not found a foster home but have found a FOREVER home! With a family that is willing and able to take them through heartworm treatment.

The dynamic duo went to their new home on Saturday. Here is a picture of them enjoying the new digs!

Thank YOU for rescuing them and helping them find a home. We love them! I've got only one picture so far, but I'll send more when they are through their treatments and frolicking outside again. Keep up your great work.

HOMEWARD BOUND!

FIVE more lucky pups headed off to new lives and new adventures yesterday. On the freedom train were Amy, Davey (brother to Goliath who left earlier this month), Pepe, and two pups (Trey & Bear).

This is truly a team effort - that could not be possible without our rescue partners, foster homes, sponsors and our hard core volunteers. Please consider helping us to save more dogs, by fostering a dog in danger or sponsoring a dog's veterinary care.

This week - to lift our spirits - we recieved the below pictures from a doggie angel who adopted not one - but TWO - of our pups!

Pictured below are Millie - who came to us in terrible shape and took months to rehabilitate - and Danielle, one of a litter of abandoned Border Collie pups.

They certainly look happy digging a hole to China in their new backyard!

Sweet Scout Need a Foster Home! Please Help!

Scout came to PAWS several years ago after being picked up as a stray by our local shelter - he was emaciated and scared. He was wearing a hunting collar - but obviously not successful as a hunting dog.

He was taken in by a wonderful hound sanctuary where he was nursed back to health, attended basic obedience classes to build his confidence and learned to live inside the home as part of the family.

Scout shares his life at the sanctuary with many other dogs. Recently a new male dog joined the pack - and for some reason - he and Scout do not see eye-to-eye.

The Sanctuary - considering the best interest if its pack - has requested that we take Scout back into our rescue - the other option being euthanasia.

Scout is a wonderful boy who has lived peacefully with multiple dogs for over 2 years now. Please help us to help him - by fostering him until he can be placed through rescue.

Scout will need a foster home that will allow him to live inside as part of the family and one that has a fenced in yard.

Scout is crate trained, neutered, heartworm negative and up-to-date on vaccinations.

HAPPY TRANSPORT DAY!

More of our pups headed off to rescue yesterday - thanks to the wonderful service provided by Pam & Kyle Peterson - http://www.petsllc.net/. Without transporters like them - so many pups would be left without a chance at a new beginning.

On their way to freedom and loving homes this week were 4 puppies (Toby, Tommy, Tanner & Tracie) and 3 adult dogs including Smiley - who has been stuck in boarding alongside Bruno for way too many months to count - a gorgeous Black Lab named Scooter who was an owner surrender, and a mixed breed pup named Gage who came to us after being runover by a car.

MORE LUCKY PUPS HEAD TO RESCUE!

We had a few lucky pups head off to rescue this past week! Several that have been with us for quite sometime.

Whitey - a sweet, adult Pittie boy, who has been in boarding for months and months - was one of the chosen pups. He has been so patient waiting for his chance to shine. He arrived in rescue yesterday after a long transport. His rescue reports that he is the nicest boy who was completely unphased by the long transport and months in a cage. Thanks to the folks at Northgate who took such good care of him.

Leah also finally got her chance at a new beginning! For such a young, sweet thing - she has been waiting way too long. Thank you to Cissy and Susan for fostering her and for taking care of her through Heartworm treatment. You guys rock!

A few last minute additions, Bella (Cocker girl) and Golliath (Pointer mix) were also sent to rescue after being saved from the local shelter.

Thank you to everyone who helped save these precious pups! We look forward to updates from their new families.

PLEASE HELP CALLIE & CHARLIE - TWO GORGEOUS CHOCOLATE LABS!

Charlie and Callie are two gorgeous, young Chocolate Labs, who came to us after being thown out of a car.

They were being fostered at Joan's house. When Joan went into the hospital, Charlie and Callie went to a temporary foster home that could keep them for a few weeks.

We did not see this as a problem, as both dogs had a rescue to take them and also a prospective adoptive home.

We have since discovered that Charlie and Callie are positive for heartworm (light positive).
So - we need a new, longer term foster for these two that can hold them through treatment (6 weeks) - or a rescue that can take them as is and treat them upon intake.

Callie and Charlie are really nice dogs who get along well with others. They deserve a chance to enjoy their lives as part of a loving family. All they need is a foster to take them through treatment.

Here is an update from the wonderful family that adopted our long-termers, Kade and Kiani. We are so fortunate to have found such a loving home for these two (and together!).

My daughter asked me the other day how long I thought they would live and I told her I didn't want to talk about it because I didn't want to think about them dying. Great news for sweet Chewy - who was featured last week on this Blog. Chewy was pulled from our local shelter when he was scheduled for euthanasia - However the volunteer who saved his life did so without having a place for Chewy to go...

Thank goodness our pleas for help were answered by a wonderful family who drove to Marion over the weekend to adopt Chewy. Not only did they leave with Chewy in tow - but they also saved ANOTHER Pittie named Bayou who was out of time at our local shelter.

These two pups have hit the jackpot as far as families go. We could not be happier for them! Below are some pictures of Chewy and Bayou with their new family and update from their dad.

We made it home safe and sound. We have finished the introductions and everyone is getting along great. Lots of butt sniffing, curiousity, and playing. We decided to rename Chewy to Bullet because he runs so fast and my son really really really wanted to rename Bayou, we allowed it and he chose Sniper to be the lil ones new name. I'll stay in touch from time to time with emails and pictures of everybody as they grow up. We enjoyed visiting with y'all. Please know all your animals are in our hearts and prayers. It pains my heart to know how many dogs are euthanized each month, I guess there must be a lot of dogs in heaven.

THE "A" PUPPIES NEED YOUR HELP!

"A" Pup - Angela

We recently took in a litter of 7 puppies now known as the "A" puppies, that had been abandoned in a woman's yard.

These poor pups came to us malnourished, full or parasites and unvaccinated. Answering the plea for help - PAWS volunteers, Lisa and Leanne took the pups home - de-wormed, vaccinated and put these pups on a high-quality diet to get them going in the right direction.

They also found a rescue willing to take the whole litter once they were healthy and had a few more rounds of puppy shots. Things were looking up for these abandoned pups!

Thursday night one of the seven puppies was lethargic and in severe respiratory distress. Lisa and Leanne took the pup to the vet where it received fluids and antibiotics. Unfortunately, the little pup was too far gone and died in Lisa's arms on Friday morning.

Only one of the remaining six puppies showed signs of illness - but a few more were exhibiting loose stools - so Lisa and Leanne took all six to the vet yesterday where they all tested positive for the deadly Parvo virus. The vet kept all of the pups at the clinic and started treatment immediately.

We received news this morning that another one of the pups died overnight. This is heartbreaking news for us.

The good news is the remaining five "A" pups are showing signs of recovery - they were making noise and wagging their tails this morning!

The surviving pups have to spend 5 days at the vet clinic at the cost of $45 per pup per day. That comes out to be $225/per day for the remaining pups or a total of $1125!

We just do not have the funds to cover that expense. We urgently need your help in covering the medical expenses to save the remaining 5 "A" puppies. Please help by donating to their care today! These puppies deserve a chance at a new beginning.

UPDATE ON TIMMY (NOW BOND)

This is Timmy! He came to us as one of three puppies (Timmy, Tommy and Tara) over two years ago along with his mother, Autumn.

Timmy, now called Bond, is obviously loving life in his New England home!

Below are pictures of him as a pup and of him as a gorgeous, happy adult as well as an update from his forever family!

Bond is great! He was very happy today that the rained stopped and he could go for a long walk and run outside. He recently learned how to run through those agility tunnel obstacles. He picks things up really quickly- although he still can't catch a frisbee!

UPDATE ON LONNIE AND LINDY!

As many of you know, Lonnie and Lindy were on borrowed time. Thanks to a wonderful person (M.K.- we can't say enough about you), they have a new lease on life. Here are some pictures from their "rescue trip" a few weeks ago.

A special thanks to Jennifer and John for fostering these two for the past year when no one else would. Another big thanks to Janice for meeting with our volunteer, Allison, in Little Rock to help with transport (we couldn't do it without people like you). Beth, you have gone above and beyond many many times to help us and we love you for it! Lastly, we want to thank Nancy for the financial support (and emotional) that ultimately saved their lives (again....).

Lonnie and Lindy are doing absolutely fabulous (see pics below- taken via cell phone so they are not the greatest quality, but you get the idea). These"couch pictures" were taken last week. We are happy to report that they are getting along great together.

Lonnie started heartworm treatment this week. Lindy still needs some funding in order for her to start treatment, but we are hoping that will come in due time (for now they are focusing on obedience training, etc.). Below is an update from today:

":D lonnie is doing great, i saw him today but he get's too excited when he sees me (so sweeeeet) so i will call tomorrow to check on him...he should be at vet's approx a week then here for the next 30 days...prayers for this sweet boy

lindy is doing awesome, we have worked on her food aggression, she is being free fed (and spoiled, can't help it - she's a total love) and she is doing really well...she has an infection in her toenail so we have her on antibiotics and she's hanging out, we went to the river yesterday...i am hoping to get her swimming within a month :D"

A NEW 'DO' FOR ADORABLE BISCUIT!

Thanks to Auntie Kelly who visited from St. Louis this past weekend, Biscuit has an updated hairdo! She feels sooo much better. Biscuit is such a wonderful girl who would love nothing more than to hang out with her family on the couch. She is a calm, approx. 6 year old gal who would probably prefer older children to toddlers.

We are in the process of trying to gather funds to heartworm treat this precious dog. UPDATED PICTURES OF GORGEOUS HAZEL!

Hazel is one beautiful girl! She will start heartworm treatment hopefully very soon (cross fingers/paws) and will be looking for a forever home in a few months. This is an amazing and very smart girl. She would LOVE to find an active family who wouldn't mind playing fetch with her over and over. She'll even show you some tricks just to get you to throw the toy (first she'll bark, then sit, then down, then roll!).

Hazel deserves a wonderful family. She doesn't really "play" with other dogs, but seems to enjoy their company. Her primary interest seems to be with her "people" (playing fetch for sure). This is not a dog that will be happy outside alone while you are at work. Hazel gets a little excited at times and will bark and jump up, so a home without toddlers would probably be best. ADORABLE PUP IN IMMEDIATE NEED OF FOSTER

Look at this face! Adorable Chewy was rescued from the local shelter right before he was scheduled for euthanasia...we are happy that his life was spared - but now he needs a place to go -- immediately.

Chewy is about 6 months old, neutered and up-to-date on vaccines. He has a rescue working on placement for him but is in DIRE need of a temporary indoor foster home.

ANOTHER UPDATE ON ALISSA!

Alissa waited for over a year in our rescue to get noticed - she is another pup who essentially grew up in our care. Thankfully, the waiting paid off - and Alissa eventually headed to rescue in New England where she found a wonderful forever home.

We just received an update from her mom that Alissa graduated top of her class in obedience training! Good girl Alissa!

CARLEY: ANOTHER BLACK DOG FINDS HER FOREVER HOME

Sweet Carley came to us back in November as a small, black pup...being a black puppy in the South - she was overlooked for more colorful, fluffier puppies by local adopters.

After waiting for 4 months and her childhood in foster care - Carley finally caught a break! She caught the Freedom Train to Maine with 37 other lucky pups.

We just received word that Carley has found her forever home at last!

Here is the first update from her adoptive family:

We have arrived home and gave Carley the grand tour of her home. She has walked the whole perimeter of the outside and had no trouble doing her doggy business outside. In fact, she whimpered at the front door to let me know that she needed to go out so I took her out and she went to the bathroom. She likes the dog bed that my youngest picked our for her and he was happy to see that she liked. Traci

SCOOTER - ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING

Sweet Scooter came to us over a year ago after being found as a stray. It is amazing to us that nobody ever came looking for him. He was fortunate to be fostered by Cissy who nursed him back to health and took wonderful care of him until his day came to move on.

Lucky Scooter was one of the 38 dogs who rode the rescue train to Maine a few weeks ago - in search of his forever home. We just received word that Scooter's dream has come true! He has found a wonderful family with a love for Cocker Spaniels! They are home with him almost all of the time. AND, the best part is, Scooter, has an adorable terrier sister to play with who is also a rescue dog!

Here is the first update from Scooter's new family:

Just wanted to let you know that everything is going well here. Sophie accepted Scooter very well and they have been racing around here playing with each other since meeting. Right now they are both exhausted and are zonked. I have attached a couple of pictures we took tonight.

TWO WONDERFUL HOUNDS STILL WAITING FOR FOREVER HOMES

Oxford and Scout are two very sweet hound dogs who have been looking for their forever homes for way too long. Both are very lucky dogs as they are being cared for by our good rescue friend, Bobbie of Silverwalk Beagle & Hound Sanctuary. Hounds can make wonderful family dogs -- loyal, loving, people oriented -please take a second look at these two and consider making them a part of your family!

Here is the latest on Oxford & Scout:

Oxford AKA Oscar gets along w/everyone. He is so comical - if the water bowl is empty, he will put his paw in it and make it rattle so I know to FILL IT! :). Should he be hungry before I feed, he won't bark - he will simply lift himself onto the armrest of my recliner and stare, wagging his tail furiously. Somehow, I always wake up :). He is just such an awesome dog, very much a house dog, has no issues w/any other dogs - just walks away if someone is "owly," prefers not to be in a crate but goes in when necessary for me. He LOVES his walks; in fact, we have trouble getting him home and back in the yard! More walk, he says, more walk and let me be w/my people!!! I simply cannot say enough about this little guy and I reiterate if I could adopt another dog, I would keep Oxford myself...:).

Oxford is estimated to be 6-8 years old. His skin issues turned out to be a yeast infection which has been treated with medicated shampoo. This is a very nice family dog - please consider adopting him!

Scout has become a well-adjusted boy. He knows a few commands to boot - such as "sit" and "down." At the sanctuary he enjoys indoor living with a doggie door to the fenced in yard.
He will never make a good hunting dog though as he is scared of loud noises and prefers the couch and watching TV to the great outdoors.

Scout is now ready for his forever home - preferrably one that loves the sound of a hound baying at the moon:)

Scout's ideal home will have a securely fenced in yard and be on the quiet side. Scout loves to go for walks (on leash) - but is also happy hanging out in the home with his human companions.

****UNBELIEVABLE NEWS!!!! Thanks to everyone's efforts in posting this emergency, we have a Rescue/Sanctuary that is going to take BOTH dogs this weekend!!! ****

Our wonderful friend, Beth, in Wisconsin is ultimately responsible (in a good way...lol) for saving these 2 pups! Thanks to FB postings and emails, the urgent posts landed in the right hands. We are INCREDIBLY thankful to M.K. for agreeing to give these 2 a chance (SERIOUSLY...WE ARE SO GRATEFUL). She has a foster home lined up for them already and will personally work with them to train them!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all who took the time to send emails, make phone calls, show your support, etc. We are truly passionate about what we do and are so blessed to know such wonderful people. We'll keep you posted on their progress!

MIRACLES DO HAPPEN WHEN PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER!

LONNIE & LINDY NEED ONE LAST MIRACLE

Lonnie and Lindy need your help! These poor pups have been in limbo since December 2008 when they came to our rescue after being put on "the list" at our local shelter.

Even though they were brought to the shelter as strays on different dates, We are pretty sure that they came from the same house, where they lived with older children. Apparently they did not have a fenced in yard which is how they landed at the shelter. Sadly, their owners never came to reclaim them.

Both are very sweet and well socialized with humans. Lindy would probably do best as an only dog (however, in all fairness, her foster mom admits that she has not been tried off-leash with any of her dogs) . Lonnie has played with his foster mom's female Pit and even one of her male dogs, however he can be fussy at mealtimes and would need to be fed separately. Both have been wonderful around older children (5 and up- they are a little too jumpy for toddlers).

Lindy and Lonnie have been in one foster home since their intake - but they have been living outside as the foster parents are not allowed by their landlord to have inside pets.

Now their foster parents are no longer able to house them due to family challenges - we have no place for these poor dogs to go and no funds for boarding. The foster parents have given us a deadline of Wednesday, MARCH 3rd to find new foster homes, rescue or sanctuary assistance for Lindy and Lonnie. If we cannot, they will have to be put to sleep (we have NEVER had to do that due to lack of foster homes, but all of our foster homes have multiple dogs and no one has room). Please do not send us e-mails about this as this is excruciating enough for us, but without someone to step up and take them we have no choice.

We would love to find indoor foster homes for Lindy and Lonnie so that they may live as part of the family. On top of everything else - Lindy and Lonnie have tested positive for Heartworm and will need to under go treatment at some point. They have been on heartworm preventative since their foster parents have had them.

These beautiful bullies just cannot seem to catch a break. We know it is a long shot - but we think they deserve a chance at a loving home, just like every other dog that comes through our rescue.

FREEDOM TRAIN FROM MAINE SAVES 38 DOGS!

As many of you know - we have been way beyond capacity since our Adoption Coordinator and Foster mom, Joan, was in a car accident. Without dogs leaving, it has been impossible for us to take in new dogs in urgent need of help.

So many kind souls stepped up to help us in our time of need - and we could not be more thankful.

We were so fortunate last week to have our rescue partners from Maine drive all the way to Arkansas to pick up a load of our rescued pups! 38 lucky pups headed back to Maine to find loving forever homes including too many puppies to count, Kaleigh, Jerry, Maggie, Carley, Terry, Scooter, and Sebastian, our special needs, vision-impaired Mini-Aussie!

This incredible rescue effort has freed us up a little to focus on some of the longterm residents - but of course - you know the phone never stops ringing...only days after the transport left...three more litters of puppies arrived at our doors (where does it end!)

THANK YOU to Sue, Jeff, Sherri, Mary and Jenny for braving weather and fatigue to save our dogs! We LOVE YOU!

***GOOD NEWS- Bubba's current family has decided to build a fence so they can keep him afterall****

This is a courtesy posting for one of our volunteer's neighbors who rescued this handsome boy. This is Bubba (also known as Buddy depending on which family member you talk to). Bubba is an active young boy (approx a year old) who needs to find an indoor home as soon as possible. He is having to live outside in the cold because one of his current family members is allergic to dogs. Bubba's current owner took him home from his workplace a few months ago after someone apparently dumped him.

Bubba appears to be at least part Greyhound or Whippet (???). He has a gorgeous brindle coat and has a slender body type. The problem (aside from needing an indoor home) is that he does not want to stay in the backyard and will climb the 4 ft chain-link fence. A home with a wooden privacy fence is preferred. Bubba generally stays in the front yard and does not seem to wander much. He just wants to be with "his family", but the family is worried because they live near a fairly busy street.

Bubba would do best in an active home with older children. He is a big puppy who enjoys giving kisses to the toddler in the picture, but he doesn't quite know his strength and accidentally knocks him over. He would benefit from obedience training as most dogs would.

We are not sure about his heartworm status or medical history (e.g., vaccination history) yet, but hope to find out very soon. If you can at least foster Bubba, please call Allison at 901-240-9848. ANOTHER UPDATE ON BRADY!

Some of you have been following Brady's story. His is a true example of a happy ending.

Here is the latest update from Brady's adoptive mom:

I wanted to let you know that Brady is doing excellent! He just graduated from basic obedience training on Monday (1/25) and we have enrolled into the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program and hopefully within seven weeks he will be certified! He is such a great learner, very hard headed but I just keep after him and he is willing to please.

After the CGC I am going to put him into clicker training and then I think we'll try an intro to agility class, if he likes it we will move on to more advanced agility courses.

There were about 15 other dogs in the basic class, Brady was in heaven and just wanted to be best friends with each one of them. The trainers are wonderful and everyone just loves him, it's hard not to!

He is the talk of our building. People are amazed at what he went through but how nice of a dog he is. He is definitely helping spread a good word about mistreated dogs, specially being a Pit Bulls.

He is one of the funniest dogs I've met, he LOVES the snow. He was ecstatic the first time it snowed, he could have played out there for hours upon hours. When we take our walks he finds the nearest snow bank and bounds through it like a bunny it's hysterical.

He also is great at finding huge sticks, some times more like logs, and will carry them the whole time we are on the walk. I always leave it out side the door where we live and he finds it every time we go back out, wicked cute.

He also is such a snorer, which I find adorable and he has so much personality, like how his tail wags in a circle!

He is finally starting to leave our cat alone, I think it took so long because she would antagonize him all day and run away and hiss at him. The training has really taught us how to keep him from chasing her.

He's gotten pretty big, I need to weigh him again but we're estimating 65lbs + (still thinks he is a lap dog though). If Bill and I are sitting on the couch he will find a way to squeeze in between us, maybe not squeeze but more or less push us out of the way.

Christmas was a riot with him! We got him five or six new toys and I had him "unwrap" one at a time. So, I called him over, helped him unwrap one toy, he'd get all excited and run away with it. The funny part was every time I called him over to unwrap another toy he didn't know what to do, he wanted to play with all the toys at once but his mouth just wasn't big enough to carry them, and he couldn't understand where all these great toys were coming from. He ended up laying down with all the toys around him, chewing on one and then another.

Well, I think that is all that is new with us over here.

SAY A PRAYER FOR UNCLE JOE

Most of you do not know "Uncle Joe" so a quick introduction is in order. To the PAWS volunteers, Uncle Joe is a hero. He has fostered dog after dog for us - dogs that nobody else would take or consider - dogs that were in dire situations with nowhere to go. Dogs such as Cajun, Chief & Jill, Josie & Oreo (just to name a few) have romped happily at "the farm" under Joe's care.

Sadly, Uncle Joe was rushed to the hospital this morning suffering from symptoms of a heart attack. He had blockage in the main left artery, it was 100% blocked. The doctors had to insert a stent to open the artery.

One of his foster (now adopted) dogs was so upset when help arrived that he tried to get into the ambulance with Uncle Joe!

The good news is that the doctors expect Uncle Joe to make a full recovery. He will be in the hospital for a few more days.

Please keep Uncle Joe in your prayers. So many of our dogs depend on him. Foster dogs that are currently waiting for his return home include:

Chloe & Mandy, Skylar and Eddie.

BLACKJACK IS FINALLY HOME- YEAH!!!

Another Happy Tail! Blackjack finally found his forever home today :) He explored his new home; played fetch in the enormous backyard with his new mom, Carol; enjoyed lots of belly rubs; and even met his new roomate Cecelia (he wasn't quite sure what to make of the talking bird!). Blackjack has it made now and will be able to roam the house and enjoy human companionship! Carol's sister Susie (who happens to be his vet too- quite the perk we know...) even bought him a dogbed to snooze on!

Blackjack's foster parents are just elated that he found such a wonderful home not far from them so they can even visit! UPDATE ON PRECIOUS PERCY!

Oh sweet Percy! If you meet Percy, you can't help but love the boy! He is a special dog who deserves the best. As some of you may know, Percy was likely hit by a car a few months ago (either that or thown out according to the vet...urgh) where he sustained a head injury and a broken pelvis. This is also the likely cause of Percy's visual problems as well. He underwent femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery in September. In this surgery, the “ball” of the femur (large bone in the upper thigh) that normally fits in the socket of the pelvic bone is removed. The resulting false joint is supported by the large muscle mass around the hip. In this surgery, generally 70-80% return to normal function and a pain-free active life. X-rays revealed 2 bullets- 1 in his jaw and 1 in his hip! This cutie is a survivor!

Percy has completely healed from his surgery and runs around the yard prancing/jumping like deer! Percy does still have a visual impairment (more impaired in the left eye), but it does not hold him back at all. He is able to navigate his environment without much difficulty. However, he would do best in a home that has non-slick floors (or at least rugs) and where the furniture typically stays in the same place. He can navigate a few stairs, but a 2-story home would not be ideal for him due to safety (he tends to jump down and up stairs, skipping several at times).

Percy can get overstimulated/excited sometimes, particularly when he is ready to "play". He will sometimes nip at your legs in order to get you to play. For this reason, a home without small children would be best. He loves meeting new people and would probably like a calm and understanding doggy companion. Percy could be an only dog as long as his owner has time to spend with him. A fenced in yard is strongly preferred as well. Percy enjoys riding in the car, but needs someone to hold him or some type of restraint (he has trouble maintaining his balance/equilbrium and can lose his balance at slight changes in direction). Percy is a loving young boy (approximately 12-14 months old) who LOVES belly and chest rubs. He also enjoys tickle games where his foster daddy scratches and tickles him along his sides. Oh and ear rubs are great too!

What Percy really wants is a forever home where he can roam around the house as part of the family. In his current foster home, he is restricted to the kitchen and gets so excited when allowed to explore the rest of the home (they have several other fosters and personal dogs, so for his saftey, he stays in the kitchen). Percy naps on his blanket and has not had an accident inside except for twice when he first got to his foster home (his foster parents didn't know how to read his cues at the time, but now they do!).

A very special thanks to Diana who has been a fantastic support for Percy and many many others. She has graciously agreed to pay for Percy's outstanding medical bills so that we can continue to save lives! We cannot thank you enough for all of your help...you are a Saint!

EMERGENCY FOSTERS NEEDED FOR 2 ADULTS LABS & 2 PUPPIES!

HELP!!! We are desperate to find a foster home for 2 adult female labs and 2 chunky puppies ASAP. Long story...basically 2 adult lab sisters approximately 9 months old wandered up to a man's home in Hernando 3 weeks ago when it was freezing outside. The next day, one of the labs gave birth to 4 puppies (2 died). Unfortunately, the man who owns the home is NOT a dog person at all and has actually threatened to shoot all of them if no one comes to get them soon. His daughter is maintaining contact with one of our volunteers and has "bought some time" for us by taking pictures of them. However, they need to find a foster home(s) by this weekend. We have posted on several email groups and have asked everyone we know, but no one has stepped up to help.

The 2 adults are having to live outside in the cold. The man and his wife have agreed to let the puppies stay inside and they let the mama dog in to nurse. Although this is better than being outside, the puppies need be by her side as much as possible so they can bond with her appropriately.

The adults have had a round of shots and will get a booster soon. The mama lab (red collar) weighs 41 pounds and the sister weighs 50 pounds. Both are very light heartworm positive and are currently on heartworm preventative (will be treated if we can find a foster home). The puppies are 3 weeks old now (born Jan 28th) and weigh about 5 pounds each! Like most labs, the two sisters are SUPER friendly. We know that it is nearly impossible to find a foster home to take all of them, but this would be their dream (and ours). If they have to be split up, we completely understand. This is an urgent situation so please spread the word.

Here are some updated pictures of some of our long-term residents (with the exception Blackjack who is relatively new). Pictured below are Mama (aka Sandy), Clyde, Julie, Andy (who isn't posted on Petfinder anymore, but could possibly be available if adopted with one of his long-time buddies Clyde or Julie), and Tuxedo (Tux).

These precious dogs have been in foster care far too long. They deserve much more attention than they receive from their foster parents (too many dogs, not enough time...). As you can see, most could use some serious exercise (lol). All are heartworm negative at last check and just need someone to give them a chance. Unfortunately, their foster family cannot save any more lives until these guys/gals are placed in permanent homes or new foster homes.

Oh poor Mama (aka Sandy). She wants to be a part of a family so badly, but just hasn't been one of the lucky ones to have found a forever home. Thanks to Jodi and her daughter, Alex, Mama enjoyed a couple of play dates with Cole (thanks Alex for sending some of these pictures!). We wanted to see how Mama would do with a new canine buddy.

Mama had a blast with Cole, but definitely had a little more energy than he did (Cole is a very calm/laid back boy). She was not near as mouthy as she used to be, but she did try to entice Cole at times by nipping at his feet/legs when he wouldn't play with her. Therefore, she would do best with another canine companion that matches her active play style. She could even be an only dog as long as her human companion has time for her. She even got to spend the night to see how she would do in a new environment. Mama did great for the most part, but still needs to work on some house rules (not getting on the couch, not all stuffed things are toys, etc.). However, she is a very good listener and stops immediately when told. Sadly, her foster parents do not have as much time as they would like to work with her on her indoor manners (she is inside, but is crated more than they would like). Mama stills loves to go on car rides and truly will make a terrific family dog.

SIDNEY BLUE EYES - ANOTHER MOM IN NEED

Sweet Sidney, a 2-3 year old White german Shepherd/Husky mix (blue eyes), has a story that is similar to many. She was dumped at our local shelter after giving birth to an unexpected litter of puppies.

The shelter contacted us for help as the kennels were full - and a shelter is no place for nursing puppies.

We pulled Sidney and her pups out of the shelter and placed them in a very temporary foster home. We even found a rescue to take them all as soon as they organized transport (the same rescue that stepped up for Kaleigh and her pups)! We were so thrilled!

A few weeks passed and no word from the rescue - we called and emailed, but no response. So now Sidney and her puppies, were stranded - as the foster could only keep them short-term.

Thankfully, an all-breed rescue stepped up for Sidney's puppies - but Sidney still needs a place to go.

Sadly, like most neglected adult dogs here - Sidney has tested positive for Heartworm disease. She really could use some doggie angels to help sponsor her treatment. Please help this mamma find her way to a better life.

Sidney is an absolutely gorgeous girl who appears to get along well with other dogs. She is a wonderful mamma to her puppies.

NEW ARRIVAL: KALEIGH - SWEET AUSSIE, DEDICATED MOM

Look at this gorgeous girl! Kaleigh is a Australian Shepherd that is approximately 12 months old. For such a young age - she has been through an awful lot!

Kaleigh was dumped at our local shelter after giving birth to a litter of puppies. As the shelter was full - her life and those of the puppies - were in immediate danger.

The shelter found a foster home for Kaleigh and her pups and we thought we found a rescue to take Momma and pups to safety. Things were looking good for Kaleigh.

Without warning - Kaleigh's foster mom returned her to the shelter - along with her puppies. She stated that she was scared her dogs would get Heartworm from Kaleigh (Kaleigh has tested NEGATIVE for Heartworm - not that it is a disease that is spread through contact anyways!) Sadly, one of the puppies died at the shelter before we were notified of the return.

We immediately called the rescue that promised to save Kaleigh and her babies - to let them know that their lives were in danger once again...but the rescue never responded - despite numerous emails and calls. How heartbreaking!

Kaleigh and her pups have now been pulled from the shelter once again. The puppies (that are mixed breeds) are heading off to an all-breed rescue - but poor Kaleigh still need a place to go.

We would love to see her go to a breed-specific rescue or an Aussie experienced home! If you love in the Memphis area and would like to provide Kaleigh with an indoor foster home until a rescue group or adoptive home steps up - we would appreciate that as well!

Kaleigh is very sweet natured. She gets along well with other dogs and was very well-behaved at the vet.

This gorgeous girl will make a wonderful companion for someone who loves this breed.

HAPPY TAIL: ANGIE - HOME AT LAST!

Angie is yet another longterm resident that has FINALLY found her forever home - thanks to the help of one of our rescue partners up North.

Angie spent the last year being fostered by PAWS mother and daughter team, Lisa and Leanne.

Angie was a challenging placement as even though she shared a foster home with other dogs - she had a tendency to be bossy. She also was quite an explorer - so needed a home either with a tall wooden fence or a family committed to walking on leash.

We began to wonder if Angie would ever find her family - but as usual - good things come to those who wait.

Angie is now enjoying life as an only pet. She thrives on having all of the attention to herself and is in love with her young human brother.

Angie is doing great!

She seems to be adapting to us and the cold well. Angie was not too excited about going to the bathroom in snow the first couple of days.

She has been very gentle with the kids. At night she follows them into their rooms and lays in there until they are asleep. She has become very protective of us too

Craig takes her for walks in the morning and stay right with him, she isn't pulling away like she did at first.

She is eating well, and after the first night she has been sleeping great.

We all are really enjoying having her in our home.

We had the PAWS SUPER BOWL DRAWING yesterday. The big winner of the Flat Screen TV and Blu-Ray Player was RODNEY H. of Tyronza, Arkansas. Rodney had never won anything in his life he said (even though he had entered many drawings and contests). He is a very deserving person who devotes his life to working with adults with developmental disabilities.

The top ticket sellers were Kelly Albrecht of St. Louis, MO, and Chamblee Witherspoon (her rescued dog, Charlie, helped tremendously) of Marion, AR (both were sponsors as well in addition to the Brett Burris Family). We couldn't have done this without you three! Beth R. of Ripon, WI and Julie C. of Collierville, TN, were close runner-ups in the number of tickets sold so thank you so much for your effort!

We also had small "door prizes" to various restaurant estabilishments. LADYBIRD LADYBIRD FLY AWAY HOME:)

Look at how happy Ladybird looks! Ladybird is yet another miraculous placement. This girl came to us via the local shelter in November 2008 so scared and very undersocialized. We had no idea what to do with her - we were not even certain she would ever be placeable.

Fortunately for us and for Ladybird - Bobbie from Silverwalk Hound Sanctuary - stepped up to foster yet another one of our wayward hound dogs.

Bobbie spent time socializing and training Ladybird. Ladybird even received her Good Canine Citizen's Certificate while under her care...but even after a year of hard effort - still nobody showed interest in this gorgeous girl.

Thankfully - our rescue partner up North decided to give Ladybird a chance. Boy are we glad they did! We never imagined that Ladybird could look so happy and relaxed - just like a "normal" dog!

Although Ladybird is still looking for her forever home - she is thriving in foster care. Below is the update sent in by her foster mom along with some very happy dog pictures!

I promise not to update you every week, but I just wanted to let you know how LadyBird did for her first full week:) We are still having problems with her chasing the cats ( I really think a home without cats would be best for her). I don't think she would ever hurt them, but she is so interested and doesn't understand that they don't like her:)

She and Diesel have started to wrestle and play tug. In fact last night Diesel had to push her away when he had had enough- she still wanted to play.

We took them to the beach today and she did well. At first she was barking at every dog that came our way, but with a stern shh she figured that like cars, she doesn't need to bark at all of them. I tried to keep most dogs away from her, but there were many dogs off leash that came our way. She didn't have a problem with any of them. A small beagle was one of them.

She also hasn't made one mistake in the house, and lets us know when she needs to go out.I think that's it. I attached a few pictures just so you would see that she is doing okay. She loves laying in the sun! -- Shannon

LAST CHANCE FOR SEBASTIAN: URGENT!!!!

***Great news! Our wonderful Rescue partner in Maine is going to take Sebastian!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH SUE AND JANET!***

We are very saddened to report that Sebastian is out of time and only has about a week before he must leave his foster home. His foster graciously agreed to take him in after he lost his "adoptive home" over the summer and we have not been able to permanently place him. His foster mom has numerous other dogs and she just cannot keep him any longer. Unfortunately, we have absolutely nowhere for him to go. Our few volunteers are swamped with many dogs due to our adoption-coordinator's car accident and going to one of those homes would not be appropriate based on his needs. We have been emailing the Mini- Aussie Rescues, but have not yet heard back (cross your fingers). In the meantime, he needs a new foster home ASAP.

Sebastian is a special needs dog who needs to go to the right home. He would do best in a home as an only dog or 1 or 2 other dogs his size or larger. Sebastian is blind, but he is able to get around fairly well. However, because of this, he will need some modifications as well as PATIENCE. Special needs dogs are not typically for the novist. A home with a fenced in yard is a must. Sebastian adores water (he enjoys wading in a baby pool in the summer and will even try to "swim" in big bowls of water too!). He is a loving boy who needs someone to work with him. He enjoys going for walks tremendously and walks well on a leash. Sebastian is not especially crazy about being crated, so he would not do well in a home where he is crated for long periods of time. He is not completely housetrained yet and will need to work on that. This boy has alot of love to give if he can just find his forever home where he knows he is safe.

Due to inclement weather , we were unable to pick up all of the tickets for the drawing (businesses were closed). BACK TO REALITY...PUPS IN NEED OF YOUR HELP

If you follow our blog - you know we have had a lot of happy beginnings lately to share with you - our wonderful supporters.

You also know that we have had a lot of misfortune in a short period of time. With our adoption coordinator and foster mom of many being out of commission - many of our dogs found themselves homeless with no foster homes in site.

We thank everyone who stepped up to help - by fostering, donating time, supplies and funds. With the help of old rescue partners and a few new ones as well - we have made great progress in getting our dog numbers back down to just slightly overwhelming:)

At any rate - now that the smoke has cleared, we have realized that we have a large number of adult dogs in our rescue who are Heartworm positive and are in dire need of sponsorship funds in order to start treatment.

These dogs are stuck in limbo and cannot go to rescue or adoptive homes until they treated for Heartworm. This also means that we are unable to take in new dogs until the Heartworm dogs are healthy and placed.

On average - Heartworm treatment costs between $250 - $300 per dog (depending on weight). Last year we treated approximately 200 dogs for Heartworm. Needless to say - we could not do it without your help - but we need your help again.

Below are just a few of the dogs waiting for treatment and funding right now. Please consider donating $5.00, $10.00 or $20.00 to help these dogs move forward in their quest for permanent loving homes.

YEY FOR ALISSA!

The happy tails are coming in left and right this week - which keeps our hope strong for some of our remaining long termers.

There are many days when rescuers ask themselves "how did I get here? why should I continue?" Alissa's happy ending reminds us "why" we spend day after day cleaning up dog poop, covered in dog hair, running to the vet, begging for money, owning nothing that is new or without teeth marks...

Alissa was with our rescue for over a year - with no interest at all. But this lucky girl was chosen to go North by one of our rescue partners - and thank goodness!

Here is the first update from Alissa's new mom (who started as her foster mom):

Well, Miss Alissa has licked her way into our hearts and has found her forever home! She is staying with us and is not going anywhere. We have changed her name to Bree, which means 'exalted one' in gaelic. (it is another way of saying princess!!).

She has a new coat to keep her warm when she is outside playing. For a southern girl she LOVES playing in the snow as you can see and eating the snow and icicles off of the trees. She loves her squeaky toys and taking naps on the couch (which she is doing right now -- snoring away!!). She has started going to doggie day care one day a week to play and run with other dogs - boy is she tired after that. She plays really well with a male pit bull, a german shepard, and a snauzer -- they just run and play from the minute they get there -- until it is time to go home!

We love having her in our lives - thank you for sending her to us!

UPDATE ON BO - ANOTHER LONGTERM RESIDENT HOME AT LAST

Check out sweet Bo! This pup was with us for such a long time and went through so much to finally find his forever home.

Hounds are particularly challenging to place in loving homes - even though they often make wonderful family dogs, many people only want them to live outside and hunt or mistakenly think they will be too loud and rambunctious to have as indoor companions.

Bo is an example of what special family members hounds can make. We are just thrilled to receive this update from his adoptive mom:

I have been remiss in sending you guys an update on Bo (now Beau) who is doing fabulous. I can't believe he's been with me for three months. He's such a good guy and has settled in nicely.

The hotspot on his leg has almost entirely cleared up which is great. I think it was likely a contact allergy of some sort because as soon as I stopped using detergent to wash his bed and the towels I use for him, it started to clear up.

He's going to day care at Fetch on Wednesdays and next week will add Mondays since the weather is so lousy and he needs the extra exercise. We've been going to the Kennebunk dog park on the weekends and meeting lots of other rescue dogs. It's amazing how many of the dogs there are rescues from somewhere. A very good thing.

As most of you know - we have had a very difficult month due to our Adoption Coordinator landing in the hospital after a car accident. This meant that on top of our usual overload of dogs - we also had to intake all of her foster dogs at once (25-30). Most of these dogs are still with us because they need to be treated for heartworm - and there is no heartworm treatment available at our vet due to production problems with the pharmaceutical company. This has caused quite a back log/space crisis for our rescue.

However, this week we were overjoyed to make a little room and send many of our pups to rescue up North.

We are so thankful to our rescue partners (Janet and Sue) for stepping up during this critical time. We also appreciate the fosters (Teresa, Julie, Lisa, Leanne, Bobbie) who took in just one more dog or kept a dog longer than anticipated - when they were already full to the brim. A special thanks to Julie who ran around getting health certificates and making sure that Josh and Daisy made it to transport on time.

Below are just a few of our dogs that will now have the opportunity to find loving forever homes through our rescue partner. Ladybird and Angie are particularly exciting placements, as they have been with us for quite some time.

HOW TO MEND A BROKEN HEART

It is always a dilemma whether to get a new dog after losing one. There is no right answer as you know...it always depends on the person and the situation. For our volunteer's sister, Kelly (who recently lost her sweet Pug), welcoming a new member to the family might just be the answer. PAWS tried to find her a little dog, but to no avail (we seem to only have medium and large dogs at the moment). Not a problem since there were lots of needy dogs in our area. Kelly spotted this sweet girl at an adoption event in Memphis and just couldn't resist!

Tinkie is her new name. She is a precious little Chihuahua mix with a bit of an overbite you just have to see. She bonded immediately to Kelly and is quite the snuggler. Congrats to Kelly and Tinkie (Tinkie has no idea yet how spoiled she will be!). Even though we couldn't find you one in our foster pool, we are just grateful that you rescued a pup in need. So for Kelly, you mend a broken heart by opening it up to someone else :) Perhaps that might work for you too!

UPDATE ON CAROLINE - WHAT A DIFFERENCE A GOOD HOME MAKES!

Sweet Caroline was a sickly little pup that came to our rescue last Spring. We thought that nobody could possibly want to adopt her - because she was suffering from Demodex and just looked so homely. We knew she was a loving pup - who deserved a chance - but would anyone else feel the same?

Lucky Caroline was scooped up by a rescue in Maine that saw her inner beauty. She went to a wonderful foster home that nursed her back to health and then to a loving forever home.

Just looking at Caroline's before and after pictures - you can see what a difference a little love and a good home can make. We cannot believe it is the same dog!

Here's an update on our rescue pup, Caroline: We adopted her in May 2009.

She's just over a year old now and right at this moment she's running around our home like a mad-woman and getting out just a tiny bit of her ENDLESS energy.

Caroline's new favorite activity is chasing a laser around the livingroom...this keeps her entertained for a long time, and it keeps me and my husband laughing, too.

We adore her and we're happy to report that she's a very healthy and happy dog today.

Caroline is "daddy's girl" - my husband Tim is simply in love with her.. She went through so much before we adopted her: abandonment at a very young age, rescue to a shelter, mange and other health issues, losing most of her fur and developing sores all over her body, rescue, transport, and a wonderful foster family with Sherry Moody, etc.

Unbelievably, she's now an incredibly well-adjusted dog who loves all people and all other dogs, too.

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in April and we're sure Caroline will love our daughter. We're just a little concerned that she'll love her SO much that she'll want to lick her and jump on her! One of our new year's resolutions is to invest in some dog-training for Caroline so that we're all better prepared for the arrival of our child.

Caroline and our other dog, Griffin (who we adopted from a shelter a few years before Caroline) are great friends. Griffin is very mellow, so Caroline keeps him on his toes, but they enjoy playing together and they fight like brother and sister, too.

Thank you so much for considering our Caroline deserving of life - most organizations would have overlooked her and we're especially thankful this New Year.

ANOTHER SAD GOODBYE...CHRISSY

Chrissy came to the Marion Shelter last year through no fault of her own. Similar to Cajun's story, Chrissy's owner found himself in some trouble and was sent to jail (and is still there to our knowledge). One of our volunteer's sisters, Kelly, decided to foster sweet Chrissy last March so that she wouldn't have to spend her last days in a shelter (she was visiting from St. Louis one weekend when she spotted her at the shelter).

You see Chrissy was 17 years young when Kelly and Dave took her in! This was their first foster pup ever. Chrissy was incredibly spoiled in their home. However if you speak to them, the joy was theirs. Chrissy was a love bug...the light of Kelly's life for sure. She would bark over and over with her hoarse little voice until she convinced Kelly and Dave to share some of Dave's culinary delights! Persistent that girl was!

We wanted to thank Kelly and Dave for giving that precious girl a "home". It takes special people to agree to help a senior dog, so for that we are truly grateful. Chrissy went to Heaven this past Saturday. Those that knew her and loved her are the lucky ones. We will miss you dearly ...

GOODBYE TO SWEET CAJUN

This past week, one of our longterm residents, Cajun, lost his battle against many heath issues.

Cajun came to our rescue after his former caretaker was in a car accident while traveling through Marion. His owner was thrown in jail, and Cajun was sent to our local shelter. When his owner was released, he left town but did not bother to free Cajun from his cell on his way out.

Cajun has been with our rescue for almost two years. In that time he has faced heartworm, cancer, leg amputation and congestive heart failure.

Through it all, Cajun was a trooper. He had such a positive outlook and a loving demeanor.

One of Cajun's favorite things to do was to play with plastic coffee containers. He only liked the blue ones - not the red ones.

He spent much of his time out on "the farm" with "Uncle Joe" in Earle - where he was very loved. When Cajun had his leg amputated due cancer, and then started showing signs of congestive heart failure, he moved into town, where he spent his remaining days sleeping on a soft dog bed at Leanne and Lisa's home.

We thank everyone who loved and cared for Cajun during his time with us - Especially Uncle Joe, Lisa and Leanne. He was very special dog and we will miss him greatly. We also thank our rescue friends, Janet, Sue and Sherry for making every effort to give Cajun a retirement home up North. We wish he had been well enough to travel - and warms our hearts to know how much you all cared.

VOLUNTEER DRIVER(S) NEEDED THUR, JAN 14th!

We desperately need a volunteer driver or two next Thursday, January 14th to help transport 3 pups to the parking lot in front of the Cloverleaf Animal Hospital in Memphis (the Animal Clinic is NOT affiliated with the transport, so please do not call them- this is just if you need to map it). One of of volunteers already has a vehicle full of lucky pups who get to travel North and our other volunteers cannot get off work. This may be their only opportunity for some time!

The transport meets at 12:45 pm on Thursday in the parking lot (you cannot miss it- it is PETS Transport- pickup truck attached to a large converted horse trailer). The address is 749 North White Station Road, Memphis, TN.

Need number 1: Josh and Daisy are both at the same foster home near Marquette Park (Poplar/Mendenhall area). Their foster mom cannot get off work for enough time to transport them, but may be able to meet someone at noon to pick up the dogs or make other arrangements. They may also need help getting to the vet in Frayser in the next day or two for health certificates.

Need number 2: Old Lamar. This is a precious Pit boy who was taken in by the Wolfchase Animal Hospital in Bartlett. This boy has a second chance at life, but only if he can get on the transport. He is super friendly and won't be any trouble. We need someone to pick him up there and take him to the transport by 12:45.

It would be a crying shame if these 3 precious dogs can't make it to safety because of lack of volunteers. PLEASE...we need a commitment by Monday night, otherwise we will have to cancel their reservations. Please call Allison at 901-240-9848 or email allieot98@yahoo.com if you can help!

8 MORE PUPS HEAD NORTH FOR A FRESH START!

That's right...8 more precious pups are heading to Wisconsin today to start new lives! Thanks to our Wisconsin Rescue Angels, Stevie Girl (black lab), Layla (boxer), Southpaw (boxer), Charlie (terrier mix), Toby (black Blue Heeler mix?), Miles (Aussie mix), Aiden (JRT/Beagle mix?), and Addison (Chihuahua/Beagle mix?) have been given a wonderful opportunity. We want to thank all of the ladies in Wisconsin for their wonderful work.

Linda- what can we say...you probably know the roads here with your eyes closed bu now (Beth- we missed you this time!). Much gratitude for driving down to St. Louis to pick up these cuties. Thanks to Kelly for meeting our volunteer to transport these guys/gals back to St. Louis (you too always seem to come through for us). Thanks Emily, Nicole, Amy, Beth, Natalie, Corey, Judy, and Donna for all of your efforts in helping us- what a great partnership we have formed! We know that taking in 18 dogs in the last few weeks was not in "the plans", but you came through again when it really counted. You guys are awesome...seriously! We look forward to hearing updates on all of our babies!

LAB LOVERS... BLACKJACK NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Meet adorable Blackjack! This poor baby just can't catch a break. He was dropped off at the local shelter (they said he was a stray, but we know he belonged to someone...) in October. On Nov 11th, 2 male dogs at the shelter attacked him- the gates between the dogs in the kennel runs were accidently opened by a small dog. The vet thinks one of the things that saved him was the collar the shelter staff put on him. Blackjack has completely healed from his injuries except he needs one more thing...

Blackjack has what is called a salivary mucocele. Basically, the dog(s) damaged his salivary gland(s) on the right side. Saliva leaks into the tissues surrounding the damaged gland and pools (in this case in his neck)- for lack of a better explanation. The condition is not thought to be painful, however, the damaged salivary gland(s) need to be removed (they can leave him susceptible to infections and can become very large if untreated). The bad news is the surgery will cost $500!

We were so excited to find out that Blackjack is heartworm negative (which rarely happens around here-another indication that he likely belonged to someone in the past), only to find out he has to have surgery. Blackjack is an incredible boy who already knows how to sit. He will put his paws on you and roll over for belly rubs! Blackjack jumps right into his foster's SUV too and rides very well in the car. The sad part is, his foster home is too full right now and he is having to stay in a kennel/exercise pen for most of the day. It's not the worst thing, but this boy seems to have lived in a home and wants to be with you. Blackjack would love to be part of a family (no cats please) where he can lie on the floor and chew on a bone. Everyone at the vet clinic could not believe how sweet he is. We hope to get new pictures soon (the foster's camera is currently broken- these were taken several weeks ago). He is about 2-3 years old and weighs 85 pounds. He gets along well with the female dogs in his foster home (and didn't seem to have any problem with the male dog he encountered at the vet clinic).

HELP!!! PAWS needs more sponsors for our Super Bowl Entertainment Raffle. We are going to raffle off a Big Screen TV (either LCD or Plasma) and hope to raise enough money to include either a Blu-Ray Disc player and/or Surround Sound.

We are also looking for people in the Memphis area and St. Louis area (or at least within driving distance to deliver the winning prize) to sell tickets. PAWS has absolutely no money right now and has to pay the minimum on various vet bills (which is in the $1000s). We cannot continue to save these precious lives without financial support. ANOTHER UPDATE ON OUR CURRENT SITUATION!

Our few volunteers have been completely swarmed with taking care of dogs, so we apologize for the lack of posts lately. As most of you know, Joan (our adoption coordinator) is recovering from a terrible car accident. She is doing well and is expected to be released from the hospital within the next few days. She will have a lengthy recovery, but we are so thankful she is doing well. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and are planning a safe New Year's celebration! The following is an update on what has been going on with PAWS!

First, THANK YOU TERESA for stepping up to help Josh, Darla, Toby, and Nate temporarily! Another big THANKS to VICKI and family for taking care of Miles! We still have 2 dogs that need to get out of the shelter ASAP: Eddie and Skylar. Eddie is a big baby who happens to have a docked tail (no idea what he really is). Unfortunately, he is heartworm positive (light positive). Skylar is a gorgeous gal who just needs a patient person to show her the way (eg., house manners, etc.). She is heartworm negative- YEY! The only thing keeping her from being adopted or taken in by our rescue partner is a foster home!

We also have 2 precious Boxers, Layla (green collar) and Southpaw (brown collar), that Joan had recently taken in who are emaciated and need some TLC. We would prefer these 2 to stay together at least until they are healthier (they sleep curled up together). These pictures were taken about 2 weeks ago and they have since been bathed and have probably already gained a couple of pounds (we'll try to post pictures again soon). They are the sweetest things you will ever meet. Sadly, both are heartworm positive (Layla- medium positive and Southpaw-light positive). Check out these faces!

Other dogs that need to be re-homed include: Stevie Girl (black lab), Hazel (Chocolate lab/Doberman mix), Callie, and Charlie (Chocolate lab siblings- they can be separated). Incidentally, Stevie Girl and Hazel get along well together if anyone is looking for two! These sweeties were taken in temporarily, but their foster homes are already beyond capacity. Please, if you cannot foster, we could really use funding for food for these dogs (donations are tax deductible) and overall medical expenses (many are not vetted at all as they were just taken in and need to be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ultimately undergo heartworm treatment). We will have more in the coming days.

CHOCOLATE LAB BROTHER & SISTER NEED NEW FOSTER AND OTHER CHALLENGES

You know the saying - "when it rains it pours?"

We are having a monsoon.

Charlie and Callie are two gorgeous, young Chocolate Labs, who came to us after being thown out of a car. They were being fostered at Joan's house. When Joan went into the hospital, Charlie and Callie went to a temporary foster home that could keep them for a few weeks. We did not see this as a problem, as both dogs had a rescue to take them and also a prospective adoptive home.

Today we discovered that Callie has tested positive for heartworm (light positive). Charlie has not been re-tested yet, but we suspect he will turn up positive as well when he visits the vet next week.

So - we need a new, longer term foster for these two that can hold them trough treatment - or a rescue that can take them as is and treat them upon intake. If you can help these two sweet pups - please contact: Allison at 901-240-9848 or Lisa at 901-826-0292.

Now - problem number 2 (or 102 depending on how you look at it).

Our vet has notified us that they cannot order the medication needed for heartworm treatment as Merial, the company that produces the medication, has temporarily shut down operations due to an upcoming merger.

We have 29 dogs right now that are Heartworm positive and urgently in need of treatment. If we cannot treat them, we cannot move them onto adoptive homes and rescue groups - which means we also cannot intake new dogs. This is a life-threatening problem for our current dogs and for future dogs that are in need of our help.

If anyone knows of a vet clinic in the greater memphis area that is rescue friendly - and has Immiticide in stock...PLEASE PLEASE let us know.

UPDATE ON DISPLACED FOSTER DOGS & AUNT JOAN

A BIG "thank you" to everyone who stepped up a week ago to help us when our Adoption Coordinator, Joan, landed in the hospital - leaving many foster dogs and her own personal dogs displaced. We are so lucky to have people like you all who care about our rescue pups.

The most recent update is that Joan is still in the hospital. She is going to be on the mend for many months - and has a long road to recovery.

We found foster placement and boarding for many of the foster pups that were living at Joan's house - but we could not find places for all of them.

As a result, some went back to the local shelter that they were originally rescued from. Although we appreciate the support from animal control - we really need your help for these remaining dogs - as our shelter here is a municipal shelter with limited space - and most of the remaining foster dogs from Joan's house are currently living in outside pens in back of the shelter.

10 MORE LIVES SAVED BY OUR PARTNER RESCUE IN WISCONSIN

RESCUE ANGELS AT WORK! We are blessed to work with such wonderful Rescues. Our partner rescue in Maine is working frantically to find foster homes for the 20+ dogs we have had to taken in this past week. Today, our Rescue Angels in Wisconsin worked their magic once again and drove 11 hours to Marion to load up the vehicle with small dogs and puppies.

TEN lucky dogs and puppies are on their way North today! Some of the dogs hadn't even been posted on Petfinder yet. Pictured below are Rambo (aka Fred the Basset Hound), Nate (a wirey-haired puppy), Tinkerbelle (precious terrier mix), 3 puppies saved from a nearby shelter, Louie (Jack Russell/Corgi mix?), Brittney (poodle mix?), Chance (Scottie mix) and Blue (small picture of a Aussie/Husky mix?).

A special thanks to all of the volunteers for helping with this emergency: Beth, Mark, Emily, Nicole, Corey, Linda, Natalie, Terri, Victoria, Leanne, Lisa, Allison, Kevin, Jenny, and the foster homes willing to take them in when they arrive. You have all literally saved their lives!

There are still at least 12-15 dogs/puppies that need a place to go (most are living outside in these freezing temperatures). HELP! We received a call this morning that our Adoption Coordinator, Joan, has been in a car accident and is in the hospital. We are not sure of the extent of her injuries - but we know that she has a concusion and broken leg.

Joan has given her heart, soul and life to help dogs in need in this area. Now it is our turn to help her.

Joan has many foster dogs at her house - that now have nobody to take care of them. We need to move as many of these dogs as possible into foster homes and boarding.

As a result, we are in IMMEDIATE need of foster homes and donations for boarding fees.

BRADY - ANOTHER SPECIAL PUP FINDS HIS FAMILY

Brady broke our hearts when he came into our rescue. Someone had chopped off his ears in some sick attempt to make him look tough - then left him to die with blood pouring from his wounded head.

Fortunately for Brady - he was found in time and fixed up by our wonderful vet - but the scars remained leaving Brady an earless pup.

Thanks to kind sponsors and one of our wonderful rescue partners, Brady made his way North to a loving foster home. Since then, Brady has found his forever home and is thriving with lots of love.

Here is the update sent in by Brady's new family:

Brady is doing great! He is starting basic obedience training on the 14th of December. He is getting pretty big as well :) I'm thinking about looking into DNA testing to see what he is, I guess all they need to do is take a cotton swab from his cheek.

I've attached a couple of photos of him, I'll let you know how training goes once we start up! The first pic was his first bath time, then we have him on his favorite bed, third is with our cat, and the fourth is just him looking innocent!

Darci is one lucky gal. She didn't even have to be posted on Petfinder because she was scooped up by her new mommy, Mickie, before we could post her! Darci was "staying" with Mickie temporarily (so Mickie thought...lol) as a foster pup. Well as you can see by the update below, she's not going anywhere!

"I LOVE HER and she and Bailey are great together - Bailey has (or should say 'had') this pink blanket that they fight over; whoever has it the other sneaks up and grabs a corner and takes off!! They are so funny to watch; has definitely brought laughter to my home. The attached are pictures of her first 'camping' trip and she did great!! I also have this small cabinet at the end of my kitchen counter that has a cushion and I guess Darci thinks that's hers cuz she'll jump on it and then put her paws on the counter and watch me fix her meals (or my own); doesn't attempt to grab the food tho', just watches. She also follows me everywhere and loves to give kisses!! Spoiled?? Yep!!!"

ALISSA FINALLY GETS HER CHANCE!

Sweet Alissa has been waiting over a year for her chance to find a loving family - finally her day has come! Alissa on transport last week, heading to rescue where she will live in a wonderful foster home until a forever family finds her!

We are so grateful to her foster mom, Melissa, for taking such good care of our Alissa for many many months. Without foster parents like her - so many many of our dogs would still be living on the streets, or in neglectful homes, or worse.

TWINKIE & WINKIE NEED A HOME TOGETHER!

Twinkie & Winkie are wishing for a home TOGETHER by Christmas (they are very attached to each other)! These adorable puppies appear to be Jack Russell mixes (mom is not a JRT, but we assume dad is). They are typical playful puppies around 9-10 weeks old. These gals will brighten anyone's day- Twinkie (black nose) is a little shy at first and Winkie (reddish-brown nose) is the outgoing one. Both are very loving and would make a great addition to your home. They will need a fenced in yard to romp and play in when outside. YEY WILLIE has a new home in the Show Me State! Willie has been adopted by one of our volunteer's friends in St. Louis! This is one lucky boy! His new mommy, Kari, is home most of the time and he has 3 adorable young girls to keep him busy. Willie even goes to softball games/practices with the girls! The youngest girl, Sam, is absolutely in love with him (and he with her)! We want to thank Doctor G for saving his boy- we love you! We will post more pictures as they come.

HELP ANOTHER EMERGENCY...LADYBIRD!

We have another emergency re-homing needed from a long-time resident, Lady Bird. Lady Bird is currently being fostered in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at Silverwalk Beagle and Hound Sanctuary (http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MO419.html).

Last year, not too long after arriving, Lady Bird jumped the 4 foot chain link fence and was mauled by two dogs, one of whom continues to live up the street from her current foster home. Physically, she has recovered but emotionally and mentally, she is tormented daily by and reminded of the event (it has caused her to be more unstable than she would be and is away from Silverwalk). Bobbie, who runs Silverwalk, dearly cares for Lady Bird, having gone above and beyond working and loving this amazing dog, but her fear behaviors (which were present before this attack and have now been exacerbated by it), have become detrimental to the smaller dogs at Silverwalk as well as her own emotional health. When she has been in town, away from the neighborhood, she has been much more relaxed and outgoing according to Bobbie. Bobbie once emailed, "they say elephants never forget- well Lady Bird should then be an elephant!"

When asked to describe Lady Bird and what type of home would be best for her, Bobbie responded:

"Lady Bird is extremely intelligent, very communicative with her eyes- her new foster home/adoptive home, after paying attention to her eyes and body language, will find her one of the easiest dogs to "read" and understand. She is completely housebroken, completely. She is an utterly loyal dog who, after learning and trusting her people, will BE their dog, either as an adoptee or foster. She is very physically fit- she can pace a car at 25 mph, so someone who is either a jogger/runner (or knows someone who is) who would like an occasional companion would be ideal for her. She does have a special friend at Silverwalk in Shiloh, a larger Beagle. Lady Bird will play bow, wrap her front legs around him in a hug and then dance away with him. She gets along better with male dogs her own size (45 pounds) who are confident, neither soft nor aggressive. Silverwalk currently has a run on smaller Beagles which does not help them nor Lady Bird :(. She is good with men and children. She can be contained in a 6 foot fence, but needs to be a house dog as well as able to enjoy the outdoors. On a whim last summer, Bobbie, who was volunteering during a Canine Good Citizenship test, decided to put Lady Bird through it...she PASSED!"

Lady Bird is an adult girl who needs someone to give her a place to finally call home; a place where she can let fear go and be herself. We are desperate to find that place for her- can you help? PATIENCE & PERSISTENCE PAY OFF AGAIN: JOSIE

JOSIE is another one of our long awaited success stories. She is an older dog who came to PAWS over a year ago with her "brother" Oreo. Oreo has since been adopted - and now Josie has her chance to shine as well.

Josie has headed to Maine to find her new home. She is in foster care with another PAWS dog - ABBY. We could not be happier for her.

SOFT-HEARTED PEOPLE: MEET PRECIOUS PERCY!

This is Percy! He is such a sweet boy with some special needs that aren't hard to meet. Percy has been through alot. He was found injured by a good samaritan out in the country. It turns out he had a broken pelvis and an apparent head injury (most likely hit by a car). Percy had FHO surgery on his left hip about 6 weeks ago and is healing well. Doc isn't sure exactly what he can see exactly, but he appears to see better from a distance. Nevertheless, this boy can navigate his environment well. Xrays revealed 2 previous gun shot wounds (bullets still in his hip and jaw), so we know Percy is a survivor. We just knew we had to save him since he had already been through so much. He is about 10-12 months old according to the vet.

This is a super sweet dog who loves to lay in your lap and receive belly rubs. He needs a patient person to shower him with love and affection. He does fall at times (mainly when excited where he gets ahead of himself and may bump into things), so he needs some type of padding (carpet, etc.) rather than slippery floors and consistency with furniture placement. He has to be leash walked until he heals completely (which should not be too much longer), otherwise he will take off like a deer (he literally prances and will jump 4 feet in the air). Percy deserves a loving home with a fenced in yard. He wants more than anything to be part of the family. Please call Allison at 901-240-9848 if you can provide him a loving forever home!

MEET STRIKING DAISY!

Check out gorgeous Daisy! Daisy's litter-mates looked like Border Collie mixes (as tiny puppies anyway- all were adopted up North when they were little) so we think she is Border Collie/Plott Hound mix or Border Collie/Boxer mix. She has the most beautiful brindle coloring. No matter what she is mixed with, we know she is absolutely beautiful and sweet too! She is about 10-11 months old and weighs about 45 pounds.

Daisy got along with everyone in her previous home (sadly, the family has fallen on rough times and can not keep her) and is adjusting to her new foster home with Teresa (who happens to be fostering Mojo and Lucie too). Teresa said she is being an angel so far (quiet as a mouse- just checking things out) and that she will slowly acclimate her to her pack(s) soon! Daisy loves belly rubs too! Kade and Kiani are doing great in their foster home, but they are still hoping to find the perfect home! What do they wish for? A home with lots of love and affection. A home where they can sleep indoors, but hang out outside in the fenced in yard as well. Ideally, they would live in a cooler climate, but as long as they stay together they will be happy. Here is some more information from an update provided by their foster mom, Melanie:

"Well...let's see...They continue to remain bonded. Kade is very social with the other dogs and Kiani is much more reserved. She does play with the other dogs but on her own terms. She is never aggressive. Kade is never aggressive...they are content to lounge in the shade or in the grass when it is sunny. They prefer cooler temperatures. I have a big covered back porch and they have a favorite corner where they like to hang out and watch everything...even when it is raining...they love it. They are great leash walkers. They love to walk on a leash. Kade loves to ride in my car...They are so loveable and loyal, they deserve the best!"
